Brig Gen Miftah Uddin taken into Army custody

The Bangladesh Army has taken Brig Gen Miftah Uddin Ahmed into custody over allegations of his involvement in the 2018 killing of Teknaf municipal councillor Ekramul Haque during the nationwide anti-drug campaign.

Investigative journalist Zulkarnain Saer disclosed the development in a Facebook post on Monday night.

According to the post, Miftah Uddin most recently served as station commander at Barishal Cantonment. Authorities placed him in army custody on Monday night under the supervision of the Logistics Area, Adjutant General and Quartermaster General (A and QMG), at Dhaka Cantonment. He will face legal proceedings under Bangladesh's existing laws, the post said.

The killing of Ekramul Haque, a councillor of Ward No 3 of Teknaf Municipality in Cox's Bazar, drew widespread attention at home and abroad during the nationwide anti-drug drive in 2018. Public demands for an investigation intensified after an audio recording related to the incident circulated on social media.

On 10 December 2021, the United States Department of State imposed sanctions over alleged human rights violations on several individuals, including former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and Brig Gen Miftah Uddin Ahmed.
