World Teachers' Day is being observed today (5 October) across the country, with the government honouring 100 teachers at the national level for the first time.

This year, World Teachers' Day is being celebrated under the theme 'Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,' emphasizing the transformative power of collaboration among teachers, within schools, and across education systems.

The day aims to commemorate and honour teachers. This year's theme is "Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status, Shaping Our Futures".

As part of the observance, a "Guni Shikshak Sammanana" (Outstanding Teachers' Award) ceremony will be held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium this afternoon. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to attend the central celebration, organised by the Ministry of Education, as the chief guest.

For the first time this year, a total of 100 selected teachers from different categories, ranging from primary to higher education, will receive the national "Guni Shikshak Sammanana." Each eacher will get Tk2 lakh in cash, crests and certificates.

This year, the awards will be given to 100 outstanding teachers, including 10 at the primary level, 20 at the secondary level, 25 at colleges, 20 at general universities, 10 at medical colleges, three at agricultural universities, three at engineering universities, four at science and technology and other specialised universities, and five under the Prime Minister's special quota.

According to the Ministry of Education's guidelines for this year, World Teachers' Day is being observed at all educational institutions nationwide, including at the upazila, district and national levels.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) website, World Teachers' Day has been observed every year on October 5 since 1994 to celebrate all teachers worldwide.

It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

Later, the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education.

It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education, and also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.

World Teachers' Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).
