Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Monday said single-use plastic will be banned on St Martin’s island.
Besides, she said measures would be taken to limit the number of tourists and restrict overnight stays on the island.
She came up with the announcement at a press briefing held at the secretariat on eco-friendly tourism management and the conservation of biodiversity at St Martin’s island.
The adviser mentioned that initiatives are being taken to free St Martin’s, Cox’s Bazar, and Kuakata from single-use plastics.
She put emphasis on the conservation of the uniqueness of St Martin’s as the only coral island in Bangladesh for future generations.
Adviser Rizwana urged tourists to comply with previous guidelines regarding the ban on single-use plastics.
She said talks will be held with hotel owners, tour operators, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism to finalise decisions in this regard before the upcoming tourist season.
