Allegations of violence involving Jamaat-Shibir activists have surfaced again following a reported assault on a young man who allegedly refused to pay extortion money. A shocking incident of this type has recently been reported in Chapainawabganj.
The victim, Abu Sufian Siju, 25, came under attack on the evening of 24 December at Umarpur Ghat in Shibganj upazila of the district. He is currently undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
According to police and local sources, Siju, a resident of Shyampur-Bajitpur village and the son of Rabiul Islam, was forcibly detained by a group of assailants and tied to an electric pole for nearly one and a half hours. He was then subjected to a prolonged assault that left him critically injured.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers fled the scene believing him to be dead. Local residents later found Siju in a critical condition and rushed him to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
While undergoing treatment, Siju alleged that the assault was premeditated and carried out by Jamaat-Shibir activists. He claimed that several individuals, including Abdur Razzak, Anwar of Sharatnagar village, and Nur, the brother of a poultry trader from Chama Bazar, were involved.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station Humayun Kabir said that a case has been filed in connection with the incident.
Police have detained two Jamaat-Shibir activists in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects, the OC added.
