Dhaka formally requests Delhi to extradite Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal

Bangladesh has formally requested the Indian government to extradite former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.

According to the source, the request was sent to New Delhi through Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A copy of the ICT's death sentence against Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also attached to the official communication.

The extradition request follows the tribunal's verdict in a case over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising.

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were named as accused in the case.

Following lengthy judicial proceedings, ICT-1 delivered its verdict on 17 November 2025, convicting Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal of crimes against humanity and sentencing both to death.

In its judgment, the tribunal ruled that the two were criminally liable under the principle of "superior command responsibility", holding them accountable for the actions of security forces during the unrest.

The tribunal later published its 453-page full verdict, which also ordered the confiscation of state-benefited assets belonging to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
