Govt's top priority is to construct Padma Barrage: Water Resources Minister
Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie informed Parliament on Thursday, April 16, 2026, that the government is prioritizing the construction of the Padma Barrage to enhance water management.
The project, estimated to cost 34,497 crore BDT, is scheduled to be implemented between 2026 and June 2033, with the proposal already submitted to the Planning Commission.
Additionally, as part of a 180-day priority program, the government aims to excavate or re-excavate over 2,700 kilometers of canals by June 2026 through various ministries.
The Minister also highlighted ongoing infrastructure works, including the construction of 292 kilometers of embankments and the dredging of 316 kilometers of riverbeds to prevent erosion and ensure irrigation.
