Probe body formed over fire at Shahjalal Airport cargo area

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat has said a five-member investigation committee has been formed to determine the actual cause of the fire at the cargo complex of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Rashiduzzaman Millat said the affected cargo warehouse was storing goods well beyond its designated capacity.

The state minister made the remarks while visiting the scene of the fire on Friday night (5 June).

According to him, the fire may have originated from an electrical short circuit. However, he stressed the need to investigate why short-circuit incidents continue to occur repeatedly.

He noted that previous fire investigations had also identified short circuits as the cause, suggesting possible mismanagement or negligence.

He further stated that strict action would be taken if the investigation finds evidence of negligence, in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service said firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within 15 minutes of its outbreak, although it took about one and a half hours to completely extinguish the fire.

The fire broke out on Friday night in the courier operations zone of the cargo complex adjacent to Gate No. 9 of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Four Fire Service units responded quickly and contained the blaze, resulting in minimal damage.
