Autumn in Bengal: Nature’s Festival of Purity
Today marks the first day of Bhadra, traditionally regarded as the beginning of autumn in the Bengali calendar
With the monsoon clouds and rains gradually giving way, Bengal is beginning to embrace the gentle beauty of autumn. As the month of Bhadra arrives, the familiar landscape of Bangladesh starts to change. The sky turns a deeper blue, white clouds drift like cotton across the horizon, and the fragrance of shiuli and shefali flowers fills the morning air. Nature seems to dress itself in a quiet celebration of purity and serenity.
Today marks the first day of Bhadra, traditionally regarded as the beginning of autumn in the Bengali calendar. After the long monsoon, the soft sunlight of Bhadra brings a subtle message of autumn’s arrival. The mornings feel calmer, the sunlight gentler and the clouds brighter against the clear blue sky.
Bangladesh’s six seasons transform the landscape in six distinct ways. Summer brings intense heat, monsoon brings rain, autumn brings whiteness and clarity, late autumn brings golden harvests, winter arrives with mist, and spring paints nature with colour. This remarkable seasonal diversity is one of the defining features of Bengal’s natural beauty.
A Landscape Draped in White
One of autumn’s most recognisable symbols is the kash flower. Along riverbanks, chars, wetlands and rural fields, tall white kash flowers sway gently in the breeze. From a distance, they appear like a white carpet spread across the green landscape.
The sight of kash flowers beneath a blue autumn sky has become deeply associated with Bengal’s seasonal identity. As the waters of the monsoon recede, these delicate white blooms announce that autumn has arrived.
Shiuli Fragrance in the Morning
Shiuli is another unmistakable symbol of autumn. In the early morning, dew-covered grass is often scattered with tiny white flowers with orange stems. Their delicate fragrance adds a special charm to the season.
For many, the scent of shiuli is enough to evoke childhood memories and announce the arrival of autumn more vividly than words ever could.
Autumn Along Rivers and Fields
The beauty of autumn extends far beyond flowers and skies. It can be found in rivers, fields, ponds, wetlands and the rhythms of rural life.
Boats glide across the rivers with their sails raised, while the distant voice of a boatman singing a bhatiyali song sometimes floats across the water. Along riverbanks, birds such as cormorants, wild ducks and wagtails can be seen. A kingfisher may sit quietly on a branch, waiting patiently for its next catch.
Along village paths, women walk with water pots balanced on their hips, while farmers look across the green fields, dreaming of the harvest ahead. White and red water lilies blooming on the surface of wetlands add another layer of beauty to the autumn landscape.
A Season That Touches the Heart
Autumn is not merely a season of nature; it is also a season of emotion.
There is something about the clear sky, gentle sunlight and quiet beauty of autumn that makes people feel lighter. Old memories return, loved ones come to mind, and the heart often longs for companionship without any particular reason.
The purity of nature seems to inspire a similar sense of calm within people. For a brief moment, even those caught up in the rush of everyday life may feel the urge to pause and simply look around.
The Magic of an Autumn Moon
And then there is the autumn moon—a beauty of its own.
When the full moon rises in a cloudless sky, its silver light spreads across rivers, fields, ponds and village paths. The familiar landscape takes on an almost dreamlike appearance.
The reflection of moonlight on the river, the silhouettes of distant kash fields and the stillness of the countryside create a scene that feels almost magical. The beauty of an autumn night is difficult to capture in words; it is something that must be experienced.
Autumn: Bengal’s Season of Serenity
Autumn is therefore more than just another chapter in the cycle of seasons. It is a celebration of Bengal’s natural beauty—a season of blue skies, white clouds, kash flowers, shiuli blossoms, morning dew, rivers, lilies and the quiet rhythms of rural life.
Today, as Bhadra begins, autumn arrives carrying its unmistakable palette of purity and serenity.
Pause for a moment. Look around.
You may see white clouds drifting across a blue sky, kash flowers dancing in the breeze and shiuli blossoms scattered over dew-covered grass.
Bengal is once again revealing one of its most beautiful faces.
