BNP Standing Committee to meet tonight over presidential nomination

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to hold a meeting of its National Standing Committee on Saturday evening to discuss its nominee for the country's next president, alongside the prevailing political situation and key organisational issues.

According to multiple party sources, the closed-door meeting of the party's highest policymaking body is expected to focus primarily on formulating BNP's position ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

Party insiders said the process of electing Bangladesh's next president is expected to be completed within August. Against that backdrop, Standing Committee members are likely to deliberate on potential candidates for the country's highest constitutional office.

Senior BNP leaders said the final decision on the party's nominee is expected to rest with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who has the authority to make the final selection following consultations with senior party leaders.

Several Senior Leaders Under Consideration

Although the party has not publicly confirmed any candidate, several senior leaders are reportedly being considered during internal discussions.

Among them, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is widely viewed by party insiders as a leading contender, citing his more than a decade of leadership as secretary general, extensive political experience, clean public image and broad acceptability across the political spectrum.

Other senior leaders reportedly under consideration include Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.

Party leaders have declined to comment publicly on individual names, saying the matter remains under discussion within the Standing Committee.

Constitutional Considerations

Speaking at a programme in Bogura on 26 July, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party's Standing Committee would decide, in accordance with the Constitution and existing laws, whether its nominee should be a senior party leader or a non-partisan figure.

Presidential Vacancy

The presidential election follows the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on 24 July.

In accordance with the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been serving as Acting President until a successor is elected. Under Bangladesh's Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.

The outcome of Saturday's Standing Committee meeting is expected to provide the clearest indication yet of BNP's strategy for the presidential election, as the party prepares to nominate its candidate for one of the country's highest constitutional offices.
