UNO comes under attack in Sherpur

The country has seen repetition of criminal attack on Upazila Nirbahi Officer surfacing audacity of the criminals and interest group to take on field level administrative officials again.

Although the country is reeling from the shock at attempt on life of Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wahida Khanom, sudden attack on another such officer has taken place.

Liaquat Ali Sheikh, Upazila Nirbahi Officer at Sherpur in Bogura, was targeted by the interest group while taking step against sand lifting from Bangali river.

A jeep carrying him came under attack at Gazaria village point under Khanpur union parishad Saturday afternoon.

Sand lifters and their associates are presumed to have committed the attack.

Two assistants of the UNO were beaten and injured. They are night guard Munjurul Haque Ranju and chain-man of the upazila land office Ujjal Kumar Paal. The duo got admitted to Sherpur Upazila Health complex.

Following information about sand being extracted by some people illegally, the UNO along with other staffs went to the spot around 5:00 pm.

The UNO found 500 meters of sand extracting pipe and asked villagers to remove it. As villagers refused, Liakat ordered his staffs to do the job. Around 100 men and women came to the place and vandalised the officer’s vehicle.

The agitated villagers confined UNO and others till 6:00 pm but they fled later the scene sensing police presence.

Police detained six persons apprehending their involvement in the attack and interrogated them, said Abul Kalam Azad, inspector (investigation) of Sherpur.
