Police have arrested three people, including Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Moinuddin Ahmed, in a case filed over the series of violent protests carried out by Hefazat-e-Islam in Narayanganj.

Moinuddin Ahmed was handed over to the Narayanganj Detective Branch (DB) of police on Monday afternoon, confirmed Siddhirganj police station OC Mashiur Rahman.

The other two arrestees – local BNP leader Mohammad Islam and Jamaat activist Md Jony – were to be taken to court later in the day, he added.

Police arrested the trio from the Talla area of Fatullah police station at 1am on Monday.

Meanwhile, Shambhupura union parishad (UP) Chairman Abdur Rauf has also been arrested on the same charges, Sonargaon police station Inspector (Investigation) Sheikh Tabidur Rahman confirmed to media.

Abdur, also the Sonargaon Jatiya Party (JaPa) president, was arrested at around 2pm on Monday.

Police and RAB had filed seven cases in Rupganj and Siddhirganj police stations after the rampage during Hefazat’s hartal on March 28.

Later, two more cases were filed by AG Properties Developments Ltd of Dhaka’s Ahsan Group and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation with Siddhirganj police.

In these nine cases, 166 people, including local BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, were named and at least 3,700 more unknown people accused. So far, 35 people have been arrested in connection to these cases.
