Investigation into cases against Rongdhonu Group chairman Rafiqul underway

The Detective Branch (DB) of police has begun an investigation into two cases filed against Rongdhonu Group Chairman Rafiqul Islam and his cohorts on charges of grabbing land, attempting to murder, and looting in Rupganj, Narayanganj.

Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Golam Mostafa Russell said that detective police have been directed to investigate one of the two cases.

"The court has ordered the other to be taken as a statement at Rupganj Police Station. We have received a copy of the court order. Further legal action is being taken accordingly,” he said.

He also said, “There is no exemption from taking legal action following a court order. It is also being looked into whether there has been any past criminal activity against the defendants. We are taking the case as per the court order.”

Two plaintiffs – Ali Azgar Bhuyian and Mohammad Mamun – filed the cases with the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Narayanganj on Sunday. Mamun accused 18 people including Rafiqul in his case, and Ali Azgar accused 31 people in the case he filed.

According to the case filed by Mamun, on 17 October, the accused threatened him and his family members, pressuring them to transfer the ownership of a part of their land to Rongdhonu Group Chairman Rafiqul and his brother Mizanur.

On 19 October, the accused, along with 30-35 unidentified individuals armed with lethal weapons, once again threatened the plaintiff and his brothers for the same purpose.

Finally, the accused and his accomplices forcibly entered their residence, and vandalised it on 21 October.

Subsequently, they looted valuables amounting to Tk16 lakh and threatened to set their house and cowshed on fire.
