Police on Sunday detained the parents of Faizur Rahman who stabbed eminent writer and teacher of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on the university campus on Saturday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Muhammad Abdul Wahab said a team of police picked Faizur’s father Atikul Islam and the mother Minara Begum up from Madina Market area in the city around 10:30pm.

Earlier, law enforcers, in separate drives, detained two uncles of the attacker from Sunamganj and Sylhet on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, two constables who were on duty at the celebration programme, ‘Robofight,’ of the SUST Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at Mukta Mancha during the incident were withdrawn for their negligence of duty, Wahab said.

Faizur was also handed over to police from Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the afternoon, he said.

Besides, an attempted murder case was filed over the attack.

SUST Registrar Isfaqul Alam filed the complaint with Jalalabad Police Station on Saturday night.

Hailing from Kaliar Kapon village in Derai upazila of Sunamganj, Faizur had been living in Sheikhpara adjacent to the university.

Dr Zafar Iqbal was seriously injured in a knife attack by Faizur on the campus on Saturday afternoon.

Faizur swooped on Dr Zafar Iqbal, a teacher of SUST Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, around 5:40pm while he was delivering his speech on the closing day of the two-day celebration programme.

Meanwhile, the eminent writer is now feeling well and out of danger, said a doctor at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

"His mental health condition is also well," said Major General Munshi Md Mujibur Rahman, a consultant surgeon and director general of medical services at the CMH at a press briefing.

Dr Zafar Iqbal bears four injury marks - one in his head, one in left hand and another in backside, he said.

The doctor said the eminent writer received injuries to the skin and muscles of his head.

Meanwhile, Dr Yasmeen Haque, wife of Dr Zafar Iqbal, said her husband is doing well at the CMH.

She also thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for asking the Air Force for airlifting Zafar Iqbal to the CMH in Dhaka immediately after the attack on him.

Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, CO of Rapid Action battalion (Rab-9), claimed that attacker Faizur confessed to the law enforcers that he attacked Dr Zafar as 'he is an enemy of Islam'.
