Remittance under anti-militancy radar

FT ONLINE

Bangladesh government is monitoring foreign earnings in its efforts to trace the source of militancy funding, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said today.

Speaking at a briefing after a sitting of a cabinet body against militancy, held at the home ministry, Amu said the government is working to trace the origin of militant funding.

“Our intelligence units have increased vigilance about whether remittance is being used to fund militancy. Bangladesh Bank and intelligence are monitoring all the suspicious transactions,” he said.

“Three types of people fund militancy – the militant, a supporter and an empathizer,” he said, adding that the government is checking fake currency, heightening border security and monitoring courier services to the end of resisting militancy.

“The rise of militancy has caused losses and casualties in Bangladesh. But our government’s successful efforts have paid off and we have been able to stop it,” Amu said.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Inspector General of Police Javed Patwari and other high-ranking officials of different law enforcement agencies were present during the meeting.
