Govt moves to reform National Education Policy 2010

Education Minister Dipu Moni has said the government has taken the initiative to reform the National Education Policy 2010 to ensure quality education at all levels under an integrated education law.

She made the announcement at a virtual discussion on Education Technology and Agriculture Transformation as part of the Eighth Five Year Plan, organized by the Planning Commission on Wednesday.

The education minister recalled that the existing education policy was formulated about 10 years ago. 

Many changes have taken place during this period. It is high time to revise, refine, and reform it. Thus, responding to the need of time, the government has taken the initiative to amend the National Education Policy 2010, she added.

“We have been able to ensure education for the country’s huge population. And now we need to achieve quality education,” said the minister. 

She added: “However, the government is committed to ensuring quality education at all levels of education. 

“The enactment of an integrated education law is in its final stages.”

The government is focusing on such subjects as science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) and is also trying to imbue honesty, ethics and patriotism among the general people in order to create skilled manpower and good citizens, she added. 

Stressing the importance of online education, the education minister said: “We have to take our education system to a certain level so that employees can adapt to any change at any given time.”

The country’s education system should provide people with the opportunity to learn online, she added.

Among others, Senior Secretary of the Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Alam and University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Dr Kazi Shahidullah took part in the discussion.
