Govt imposes ‘lockdown’on Shibchar upazila

Local administration in Madaripur’s Shibchar Upazila has declared to shut down all shops, mass transport excluding pharmacies, kitchen market and groceries to curb the spread of coronavirus in the area.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shibchar Md Asaduzzaman confirmed this to FT Team on Thursday afternoon.

The decision of the ‘lockdown’ came a few hours after health minister Zahid Maleque said the government might impose a lockdown on the area including Madaripur district.  

Besides, the Upazila administration informed that some 212 people in the area were asked to stay in quarantine at home to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, four more people were tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country on Thursday, raising the total number of corona cases to 18.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque, in a media briefing, informed that at least 5,000 people were quarantined to prevent the transmission of coronavirus till Thursday morning.

Besides, the authorities confirmed the first death from coronavirus in the country on Wednesday.

The death toll from coronavirus or Covid-19 reached 8,967 globally on Thursday. It has so far infected 219,240 people around the world, according to worldometer.

Of them, 124,528 are currently being treated with 6,815 in serious or critical condition.
