NEWS DESK

A record single-day jump of 8,380 new patients in the last 24 hours has taken India's coronavirus tally to nearly 1.82 lakh cases, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. The number of total deaths linked to the highly infectious illness crossed the 5,000-mark after 193 patients died in 24 hours, according to official data. This is the first time that the number of coronavirus cases in India crossed the 8,000-mark in a single day. The country - ninth worst hit due to the pandemic - has been registering record spikes for the last three days. The sharp rise in cases comes as India prepares to re-open in a phased-manner after nearly two months of lockdown to tackle the pandemic.

Here are top 10 developments on coronavirus cases in India:

  1. The government on Saturday extended the lockdown till June 30 as it revealed a phased plan to unlock India. Malls, hotels, restaurants and places of worship can open on June 8 except in containment zones, the areas with the most number of coronavirus cases.

  2. Restrictions have been removed on movement of people and goods between states. Night curfew will stay, but timings will be changed to 9 pm-5am from the existing 7 pm-7am. Cinemas, schools and international flights will reopen after an assessment in the next few weeks.

  3. "Containment zones will be demarcated by district authorities after taking into consideration the guidelines of the Health Ministry. In containment zones, only essential activities will be allowed," the government's notification read.

  4. Nearly 50,000 COVID-19 cases have been recorded in a week's time in India. Earlier, this week India entered the list of top 10 worst-affected nations after a record spikes for three consecutive days as it logged 1.31 lakh cases.

  5. The doubling time of coronavirus cases in India has improved to 15.4 days from 13.3 days, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday. "As on May 30, the doubling time in the past 14 days was 13.3, it has improved to 15.4 days in the last three days. The fatality rate stands at 2.86 per cent," an official statement read, news agency PTI reported.

  6. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state in the country with over 62,000 cases. The state police on Saturday recorded 114 COVID-19 patients in 24 hours, taking the total active cases to 1,330.

  7. Delhi crossed the 18,000-mark on Saturday as it recorded the biggest single-day jump of 1,163 new cases. The national capital can't have a permanent lockdown, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Saturday, assuring that his government is "four steps ahead of coronavirus".

  8. Nearly 90,000 patients in India have recovered so far. A record number of over 11,000 patients recovered on Friday, the government said.

  9. Worldwide, the number of coronavirus cases have crossed the six-million mark.

  10. The United States- the epicentre of the virus - recorded 960 deaths on Saturday, taking the total to 1,03, 758. The country has officially logged 1,769,776 cases of the virus, far more than any other nation. The new numbers came as US President Donald Trump faced a broad backlash over severing ties with the World Health Organization during the pandemic.
