Election won't stop even if BNP doesn't join: Salman F Rahman

Salman F Rahman, private industry and investment advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Thursday said that BNP leaders’ claim that foreigners do not want to see the current government in power in the future is nothing but gossip.

"Elections will be held in accordance with the constitution; if anyone refrains from participating, elections will not be postponed for them,” he said. “Most parties are prepared to take part in the upcoming election."

The PM’s advisor made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion and workshop with the members of the central election management committee at Nawabganj Pilot High School in Dhaka's Nawabganj on Thursday as the country gears up for the 12th parliamentary election.

"The only thing foreigners want is for upcoming elections in Bangladesh to be free, fair and peaceful. Their demand aligns with the government's desire. The current government is also committed to conducting unrestricted and fair election,” Salman said.

He called on the leaders and activists of Awami League to reach neutral people in order to shore up support for the upcoming election.

“For the upcoming election, Awami League workers should not only reach out to Awami League supporters but also extend their outreach to neutral voters. Even those who will not vote for Awami League should also be reached out to," he said.

Highlighting the various development scenarios of the country, he directed the leaders and activists of the party to seek votes in favour of ‘boat’ – the election symbol of the ruling Awami League.
