Nor’wester leaves Bagerhat without power, 1 dead


A farmer was killed and eight others injured as a nor’wester swept parts of Bagerhat district on Sunday.

Meanwhile, power supply to different parts of the district was suspended as 34 electric poles were uprooted during the strong storm, leaving 400,000 people without power.

The deceased was identified as Likchan Sardar, 35, of Kachua upazila.

Khalid Hossain, deputy commissioner of Bagerhat, said Likchan died on the spot a thunderbolt struck him while he was working at his field during storm at Maghia in Kachua upazila.

Besides, eight people were injured as billboards and trees collapsed on them during storm in separate places.

One hundred thatched houses were damaged while a number of trees were uprooted when the nor’wester swept different parts of the district including Sadar, Kachua, Rampal, Fakirhat, Sarankhola and Morrelganj upazilas around 10am.

A passenger bus was also damaged as a billboard collapsed on it.

Sushanta Roy, additional general manager of Bagerhat Polli Bidyut, said some electric poles were uprooted while a number of electric wires snapped during the storm, leaving 400,000 customers of Polli Bidyut and West Zone Power Distribution Company without power.

The workers of the Power division are working to restore power supply. However, the Upazila Nirbahi Officers have been asked to prepare a list of damages.
