Shahiduzzaman MP tested positive for Covid-19


Awami League member of parliament from Naogaon-2 Md Shahiduzzaman Sarker has been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus. 

He is the first lawmaker of the country to have tested positive with the virus. 

Confirming the matter, ruling Awami League Whip Md Atiur Rahman Atik told media that on Friday, Shahiduzzaman’s test report diagnosed him positive for Covid-19.

Shahiduzzman, also the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on power, energy and mineral resources ministry, was staying in his NAM Bhaban flat, and kept himself isolated there as per doctor’s advice, sources said.

According to sources, 65-year-old Naogaon MP and former whip has been suffering from fever for few days but there were no coughs or other symptoms, however, he also has diabetes.

Earlier, Shaiduzzaman said he probably got infected with the virus while he went to his village home recently.

"I went to my village home recently and probably got infected there," the MP said.

He added that he had been suffering from fever for the last three days.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station OC Jan-e-Alam Munshi said the law enforcement did not lock the area down.

“It’s a safe zone. The residents are aware and they have isolated themselves,” he said.

The police were staying outside the buildings to provide the residents with whatever they need, he added.

Bangladesh on Friday confirmed two new deaths from the novel coronavirus and 571 new cases of infection.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 170 and the number of total infections stood at 8,238.
