Donor agencies disbursing loans thanks to political stability: FA

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday that donor agencies are disbursing development assistance due to the country's political stability.

The economic stability of a country depends on its political stability. With a favourable atmosphere prevailing following the announcement of the national election scheduled for February next year, donor agencies are now more relaxed in their lending, he said.

He was talking to reporters after emerging from an Advisory Council Committee on Government Purchase, held at his ministry office in Dhaka this noon.

About the ongoing movement of the NBR staff and officials, he said there was no transparency and accountability in the central tax administration.

Some officials and traders made profits during the tenure of the previous government and the ongoing movement stems from the conflict of interest, said the finance adviser.

The government is likely to hold a meeting with the agitating NBR officials on Thursday to put an end to the prevailing crisis, he said.

A group of vested quarters is misleading the NBR officials, though the government is assuring that they would face no professional difficulties, rather, their status will increase, he said.

About the speculation that Iran might retaliate for the US’s strikes on its nuclear facilities by closing the world’s busiest oil shipping channel, the Strait of Hormuz, he said it will not affect Bangladesh in importing white and fuel.

But it may affect a bit in importing fertiliser, said the finance adviser.
