For the second day in a row on Sunday, Bangladesh reported the number of new Covid-19 cases below the 2,000-mark as 1,359 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours.

On Saturday, the number of daily cases was 1,452. With today's figures, the total case count stands at 7,61,943 in the country with a positivity rate of 9.60%.

On 14 March, on the onset of the second wave of coronavirus, Bangladesh reported 1,159 cases in 24 hours. Since then the daily infections kept rising, surging up to 7,626 on 7 April.

In the meantime, the country logged 69 more daily deaths from the dreaded virus, pushing the death toll to 11,579. The death rate stands at 1.52%.

Also, the number of samples tested during the 24-hour period was lower than that of the last few days. The country tested 14,158 samples in its 420 labs on Sunday, which was 15,117 on Saturday and 21,046 the day before yesterday.

Among the latest day's victims, 44 were men, and 25 were women. Of them, 67 died in different hospitals across the country while two died at home.

Moreover, 38 of the deceased hailed from the Dhaka Division, 14 from Chattogram, seven from Barishal, five from Khulna, two from Rangpur and one each from Rajshahi, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.

Also, 2,657 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the last 24 hours, with an 90.21% recovery rate.

The Covid-19 victims' gender breakdown shows that 8,434 of the total deceased across the country were men and 3,145 were women.

The country's maiden cases were reported on 8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.

India's new coronavirus cases dipped marginally on Sunday but deaths due to the infection jumped by a record 3,689, with one more state going into lockdown as the nation's creaky healthcare system is unable to cope with a massive caseload.

Authorities reported 392,488 new cases in the previous 24 hours to push total cases to 19.56 million. So far, the virus has killed 215,542 people, reports Reuters.

As of Sunday, 3,207,783 people have died of Covid-19 globally with 152,866,393 cases of infection have been recorded so far.
