School admission through lottery suspended

School admission through lottery, which was supposed to begin on Wednesday for the first time in the situation due to Covid-19 pandemic, has been suspended.

The lottery and the application process, supposed to be done online in some 683 government schools across the country from class one to class nine, were suspended after the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education issued a circular on Tuesday.

The scheduled lottery has been temporarily suspended as a writ petition related to the ‘digital lottery system’ was pending with the High Court, said Director General Syed Md Golam Faruk in the circular issued by the education ministry.

The fresh schedule for the digital lottery will be issued soon by the ministry, the circular mentioned.

Some guardians, however, alleged that the schools at the city did not inform them about the suspension order which created unnecessary hassle as many guardians having their kids had already gathered before their respective schools.

Earlier on November 25, Education Minister Dipu Moni said that her ministry took a decision that the coming academic session will be based on lottery and the whole process will be conducted digitally, due to the Covid-19 situation in the country.

Usually admission for the first grade was done through lottery but this year the lottery system was extended till grade nine to avoid health risk in the pandemic.
