Barishal University closed indefinitely amid student protests

The authorities of Barishal University have shut down the university for an indefinite time amid student protests to press for a 12-point demand which includes the vice chancellor’s resignation.

Students were ordered to leave their residential halls by 5:00 pm on Thursday.

The closure was announced late on Wednesday night through a notice signed by the registrar, said the university’s Public Relation Officer Faisal Ahmed.

The students began demonstrating in protest against a remark by Vice Chancellor Emamul Haque and the authorities’ failure to include students in the programme marking Independence Day.

The authorities announced the closure after students boycotted classes, exams and continued to protest throughout the day with their 12-point demand on Wednesday.

Classes, exams and all academic programmes will be halted indefinitely from Thursday to ensure the safety of students, teachers and officials in light of the “untoward incident that arose” during the Independence Day programme, the notice says.
