DMP to launch month-long campaign to discipline Dhaka traffic

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to launch tomorrow a month-long campaign to discipline Dhaka traffic, particularly buses, to expose operators to punitive actions for rule violations, DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said today.

“Route permit of vehicles will be cancelled if they violate traffic rules and operators are found to have appointed drivers on contact basis,” he told a press conference at DMP Media centre here.

He added: No bus will also be allowed to load and unload passengers anywhere without the designated 121 bus stops . . . buses must also keep their doors shut and open the gates in bus stops alone.”

Mia said DMP decided to drive out improvised small public carriers called “human haulers” from city streets since those were operating without any authorization.

He also requested refueling stations not to sell fuel to motorcyclists not attired in safety helmets and urged pedestrians to use zebra crossings, foot over bridges and underpasses while crossing the roads to avoid accidents.

“It will (however) take time to bring complete discipline in the traffic management . . . the current situation is the culmination of the long time mismanagement,” Mia said.
