PM asks for forming AL’s countrywide relief committees

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday asked Awami League and its associate bodies to quickly form a Relief Committee comprising of party leaders and activists up to ward level across the country.

She gave three directives including this while holding a views exchange meeting through video conference with AL leaders and activists who were present at the party president's political office at Dhanmondi.

In the hour-long meeting, Hasina, also the AL chief, discussed various steps of the government which have been taken to face coronavirus.

She also gave various organisational directives to leaders and activists of AL and associated bodies for the upcoming days to face the challenge of COVID-19.

Sheikh Hasina asked them to submit names of the Relief Committee to their organisational districts.

This committee will prepare a list of poor, distressed and helpless people irrespective of party affiliation and creed and that list will be handed over to the local administration to assist and coordinate for preparing an accurate list.

It will extend all out assistance to the local administration in the humanitarian crisis and activities to distribute relief materials.

She said leaders of AL and its associated bodies will help to provide relief to the door steps maintaining health guidelines.

In another directive, the AL chief said currently some 50 lakh ultra poor, distressed, helpless and jobless people have been put under the purview of government ration card and steps have been taken to include additional 50 lakh people in the ration card system to face the crisis triggered by coronavirus outbreak.

The committee under the leadership of AL will help the local administration so that the people in need could be included in that list.

In the third directive, the relief committee of AL will raise awareness among people to follow the government directives, maintain social distance and health guidelines to prevent COVID-19 and remain beside the people in this crisis.

Besides, the relief programmes of the AL with its own funding will continue.
