Matarbari Port dev phase-I work to end by 2026: Khalid


State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said on Thursday that the first phase work of Tk 177 billion Matarbari Port development project will end by 2026.

"We expect the first phase development work of Matarbari Port will end by 2026," he said while chief representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Yuho Hayakawa called on him at the ministry of shipping (MoS) in the city.

The Matarbari Port development project is a fast-track project of the government that got approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on March 20.

During the meeting, Khalid Mahmud apprised the JICA chief representative about progresses in the project work.

He said that the government has completed the primary work of acquiring around 288.235 acres of land for the development of the port.

The estimated cost of the project is over Tk 177 billion.

Of the total, the JICA will provide over Tk 128 billion while the government will bear over Tk 26 billion and the Chittagong Port Authority over Tk 22 billion for the development of Matarbari Port.

There will be multipurpose terminals, container terminals and connecting roads between the port and other national highways of the country.

The roads and highways department will build adjoining 17 bridges of the port that will help connect roads to the port.
