United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim are scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Saturday.

They are coming to Bangladesh to see firsthand the plights of Rohingya people in Cox’s Bazar, foreign ministry sources said.

During their visit, the UN chief and the WB president will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.

The World Bank president is scheduled to hold talks with Finance Minister AMA Muhith.

The UN secretary general visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar in 2008 when he was the chief of the UNHCR, diplomatic sources said.

Besides, the UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, will arrive in the capital on Sunday.

About 700,000 Muslim Rohingya population have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh after a military crackdown in August 2017 which the United Nations termed as ‘ethnic cleansing’.

Bangladesh is in talks with Myanmar for repatriation of the displaced people. The international community has called upon Myanmar to ensure an environment so that they can return voluntarily to their homeland.

The UN chief has asked Myanmar to address the root causes of violence. He said that it is the responsibility of Myanmar government to provide security and assistance to Rohingya people.

Judges at the International Criminal Court have given Myanmar a deadline to respond to a prosecution request that they consider hearing a case on the alleged deportation of Rohingya minorities to Bangladesh.

The judges recently asked Myanmar to respond to the request made in April that the ICC should exercise jurisdiction over the alleged crimes by July 27.
