ACC launches probes against 5 more NBR officials
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched probes against five more NBR officials, the corruption watchdog said in a press statement on Tuesday.
The suspected tax officials took bribes from taxpayers for allowing tax evasions, and lowering taxes, the statement said.
The officials being probed are: Additional Commissioner Abdul Rashid Mia, Member Lutful Azim, Deputy Tax Commissioner Mohammad Shihabul Islam, Joint Commissioner Md Tariq Hassan as well as Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, former additional director general of NBR’s Central Intelligence Cell (CIC).
On 29 June, the corruption watchdog launched the first probes against NBR officials since a two-month protest started against government reformist efforts to curb corruption at the tax regulatory authority.
Five among the six officials targeted in the probes were key members of the work boycott movement that severely hurt the national economy during its course.
A few hours after the ACC announced the start of probes, the protesters withdrew their movement. The government welcomed the decision to call off the protests, but noted the ACC probes would continue independently.
