Most buildings in Old Dhaka are hazardous: RAJUK Chairman

Most buildings in Old Dhaka are at high risk, according to Engineer Md Reazul Islam, Chairman of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK).

He said that in many cases, six- to seven-storey buildings have been constructed on plots smaller than one katha, and often without any approved plan.

He made the remarks on Saturday (22 November) while speaking to journalists after inspecting several buildings in Bangshal, Old Dhaka.

The RAJUK Chairman warned that the building in Kosaituli, whose railing collapsed during the recent earthquake, would be sealed off if its approved design is not produced within the next seven days.

“We do not approve building plans for plots smaller than one katha,” he said. “Those who are still constructing buildings by force—we are disconnecting their utility meters. Yet some continue the work using illegal meters or generators.”

He further stated that RAJUK has undertaken a planned urban redevelopment initiative for Old Dhaka, aimed at preserving the heritage of its century-old structures while ensuring safer urbanisation.
