Students' protests spread across Dhaka

Students blocked Farmgate,Motijhil, Mirpur and ECB Chattar intersections on Tuesday again demanding punishment of the driver responsible for Sunday’s accident that killed two college students in the city and apology from the Shipping Minister for his comments.

The protests, staged by the students for the third consecutive day, brought the city traffic during the morning rush hours to a complete halt, creating immense sufferings to office-goers and other commuters.

Witnesses said students from Govt Science College at Tejgaon put barricades on the road near Farmgate police box around 10:45 am halting traffic.

Law enforcers, however, cleared the road within half an hour. 

Students also blocked the road at ECB Chattar in the morning.

Law enforcers chased the protesters and cleared the road, according to witnesses.

Students also put barricades at Mirpur-1 intersection, halting vehicular movement for over an hour. Law enforcers then swung into action and cleared the road.

On Sunday, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College, were killed as a bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road.

Angered by the incident, students went on a rampage vandalising whatever buses they found before them, and they carried on the agitations for the whole day on Monday.
