Fire hydrants on roads needed

Fire outbreaks are happening in Dhaka city every now and then. Around 80 people got killed in a fire mishap in Chawkbazar on 21 February this year.

Another 26 people lost their lives in one more fire accident in Banani on 28 March. Unplanned urbanization and lack of fire fighting instruments inside the buildings are responsible for such occurrences. Most of the high-rise buildings in Dhaka do not have fire exit. Sometimes the vehicles of fire brigade cannot get closer to the spot because of narrow roads in most parts of Dhaka city.

As there is a shortage of ponds and water bodies in Dhaka, it is important to set up fire hydrants on the footpaths of different roads of the capital city. Fire hydrants are connected with water pumps. Fire fighters can use these fire hydrants to release water at a high speed to extinguish fire.

Urbanization experts have said that now it has become essential to install fire hydrants on the sidewalks of roads all over Dhaka city. Most of the canals and marshlands around Dhaka city have been filled up by land grabbers and real estate companies.

As a result, fire service often runs short of water when fire breaks out in any location. Engineers have urged the city corporation authorities and the concerned government organizations to take immediate steps to establish fire hydrants to save the life of people when buildings catch fire.

Fire hydrants are seen on the pavements of roads in many countries but these things are not seen in Dhaka. Moreover, Dhaka is an overpopulated city. City planners and civil society members have also laid emphasis on administrative decentralization to reduce the load of population from Dhaka. It is also highly necessary to provide fire fighting appliances to all the buildings of Dhaka city and to train up people to extinguish fire.
