Writ seeks ban on student politics at universities

A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday seeking its directives to ban the student politics and stop ragging at all universities across the country. 

The writ also sought proper compensation for the family of Buet student Abrar Fahad who was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall and security of the students at all universities. 

Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ petition where education secretary, vice-chancellors of all universities and police authorities have been made respondents.  

The hearing on the writ is likely to be held with the HC beach, led by Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury, this week, said the petitioner.

He said the practice of politics on university campuses is against the Constitution and has no legal basis. “It was proved through the brutal murder of Buet student Abrar that there’s no logic behind student politics at universities.” 

Abrar Fahad, 21, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), was found dead on the staircase of the dormitory in the early hours of October 7 after he was taken to room-2011 around 8pm on October 6.
