Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh held his nerve the final over as India edged Bangladesh by five runs in a crunch rain-hit Twenty20 World Cup clash in Adelaide that went to the last ball.

India, who scored 184-6 in 20 overs, can clinch a semi-final spot with a win against Zimbabwe in their final Group 2 match on Sunday after Bangladesh faltered in their revised chase of 151 in 16 overs to end on 145-6.

Bangladesh remained in the third position of Group 2 with four points in four matches while India went on top with six points in the same number of matches.

After winning the toss, the Tigers decided to bowl first and India posted 184 runs after losing six wickets. Four overs were reduced from Bangladesh's innings and they needed 151 runs from 16 overs. They managed to collect 145 runs after losing six batters.

The Tigers got off to a flying start with the bat but things got changed when the match resumed after the rain. Before the rain halted the match, Bangladesh were 66 for none and 17 runs ahead of the DLS par score.

Litton Das was aggressive from the beginning. He walked off after scoring 60 off just 27 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and three maximums. The wicketkeeper-batter took just 21 balls to smash the half-century.

The ball was flicked to deep mid-wicket by Najmul Hossain Shanto who was providing Litton with the perfect support from the other end wanted the second and Litton was slow. Even a full-length dive was not enough as KL Rahul hit the stumps direct from the deep.

After the end of seven overs, rain halted the game and the Bangladesh innings were reduced to 16 overs and their new target changed to 85 from 54 deliveries.

After Litton’s departure, Shanto could not survive long as he threw his wicket away. He tried to hit big shots but Suryakumar Yadav took a good low catch at long-on.

Post that, Afif Hossain came into the middle but could not perform well and walked back to the pavilion after scoring just three runs.

Later, Shakib Al Hasan followed in the footsteps of Afif. The run rate was going up and he wanted to hit a maximum but Deepak Hooda was there to grab the ball.

In the end, Nurul Hasan and Taskin Ahmed tried to turn things around for their side but Nurul’s 14-ball-25 and Taskin’s 12 off seven deliveries was not enough to avoid the defeat.

Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya bagged two wickets each while Mohammed Shami picked up one for India.

Earlier in the first innings, Bangladesh got a perfect start but could not carry on and India posted a decent total on the board.

India lost their skipper Rohit Sharma in the fourth over as Hasan Mahmud removed him. The seamer dropped Rohit’s catch in the previous over.

Rohit who went for two looked to slash it and ended up finding the man at the gully. That was too close to putting it away and he could not get enough power on the shot. It was an excellent sharp take by Yasir Ali.

However, after losing their skipper early, Rahul and Virat Kohli became furious and started charging the Bangladesh bowlers. Both batters smashed half-centuries.

Rahul scored 50 off 32 deliveries with the help of four maximums and three boundaries. Shakib Al Hasna dismissed him in the 10th over.

Post that, Suryakumar came to support Kohli. Suryakumar who was drooped on 11 by Mustafizur Rahman was removed by Shakib.

Suryakumar made 30 off 16 deliveries before walking back to the pavilion. Shakib came from wide off the crease and angled it back into the right-hander, had his field right and forced Suryakumar to try and go too square behind the point.

Suryakumar backed away and tried to access that area with the cut, missed the flight of the delivery and has his off-stump pegged back.

Later, Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and others came into the middle but could not perform well. However, Kohli reminds solid on the other end.

The in-form batter reminds unbeaten for 64 from 44 deliveries. He decorated his innings with eight boundaries and a maximum.
