Bulbul appointed NSC councillor to BCB, set to lead BCB transition

Former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam Bulbul has been appointed as a government-nominated councillor to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), replacing Sheikh Hamim Hasan.

It was confirmed by an official order from the National Sports Council (NSC) dated 29 May.

Aminul Islam Bulbul, who currently works as a Development Manager with the International Cricket Council (ICC), has agreed to take on the leadership role. He will become only the second cricketer with international playing experience for Bangladesh to assume the presidency after Faruk Ahmed.

The appointment comes at a time of escalating crisis in the BCB following the government’s move to revoke Faruque Ahmed’s NSC councillorship.

The development follows a formal letter sent by eight BCB directors to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, expressing a vote of no confidence against Faruk Ahmed. Responding to that request, the NSC cancelled Faruk's directorial nomination, leaving the BCB presidency vacant.

While Faruque still holds the elected presidency, the shift in government backing significantly weakens his position, paving the way for Bulbul to take on a leading role. The change underscores the government’s intent to stabilise the board’s leadership.

Aminul Islam Bulbul, former national team captain and Bangladesh’s first Test centurion, is set to take over as BCB president for the next four months, until the next elections.

Bulbul’s appointment is expected to be finalized during a BCB board meeting scheduled for Friday at 4:30 PM, where he will be formally accepted as the new president to assume greater responsibility.

The meeting will be chaired by BCB director Nazmul Abedin Fahim and once Bulbul is confirmed as a board director, a new president election will be held. Bulbul is expected to run unopposed and be unanimously elected as the new president of the board.

Sources also confirmed that former cricketer Akram Khan will attend the meeting, despite not signing the no-confidence letter against Faruk.

This transition marks a significant leadership change at the helm of Bangladesh cricket, with expectations high as a former national icon steps in during a time of administrative flux.
