Commuters suffer as city roads go under rainwater


City dwellers witnessed heavy rains for about two hours on Tuesday that inundated roads and lanes in many parts of the capital triggered huge traffic tailbacks.

Dhaka received a total of 45.2mm rain from 12:00 pm to 2:15 pm, Ashraful Alam, meteorologist of Bangladesh Met office told The Finance Today.

Dhaka is likely to receive light to moderate showers in some areas in the next 24 hours starting from 6:00 pm today, the official said.

Many areas, including Rampura, Badda, Khilgaon, Mauchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Moghbazar, Mohammadpur, Motijheel, Kazipara, Gendaria, Tikatuli, Bijoy Sarani, Rokeya Sarani and Arambagh went under ankle-deep water, inflicting sufferings on commuters.

Just within half-an-hour of the downpour on Tuesday afternoon, citizens were seen posting videos of waterlogging in Mirpur’s RokeyaSarani and Kazipara, Jahangir Gate, Green Road, parts of Indira Road, Tejgaon, Panthapath, Kalabagan, Dhanmondi, Jhigatala, Shankar, Jatrabari, Bashundhara Residential Area and many places of Old Dhaka.

The commuters, especially schoolchildren, faced serious trouble in reaching their destinations due to waterlogging and lack of transport.

Many of them were seen wading through rainwater.

Besides, the Met Office recoded 62.2-millimeter rainfall in Chattogram division in the last six hours till 2 pm on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rain shower is expected to occur in some places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s forecast published on their website at 9:00 am that “Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.”
