The initiative at Munshiganj District Jail marks the beginning of a new technology-driven chapter in Bangladesh’s prison management system

Bangladesh’s first cashless prison management system has been launched at Munshiganj District Jail as part of efforts to modernise the country’s correctional services through technology.

The Prison Directorate disclosed the information in a press release issued on Sunday.

Under the new system, prisoners’ locations within the jail are being monitored using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. The same technology is also being used to facilitate inmate headcounts and ensure accurate monitoring within prison wards.

According to the Prison Directorate, money provided by inmates’ relatives will now be deposited into prisoners’ accounts through a virtual system. Prisoners will then be able to use the funds to purchase essential items from the prison canteen using RFID-enabled transactions.

The directorate said the introduction of the system has eliminated cash transactions inside the prison, helping to enhance transparency and accountability in financial dealings while making it easier to track inmates’ whereabouts.

It added that the use of modern technology would strengthen prison security, simplify inmate data management and improve the overall quality of services within correctional facilities.

The initiative at Munshiganj District Jail marks the beginning of a new technology-driven chapter in Bangladesh’s prison management system, the Prison Directorate said.
