Bangladesh records 28 more coronavirus deaths, 1,532 new cases

Twenty eight more people died of the highly infectious coronavirus disease in the last 24 hours to 8:00 am on Sunday. With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 480.

This is the highest single-day death count from coronavirus in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, 1,532 more people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 33,610.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 8,908 samples in 47 labs in the past 24 hours, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 6,901 after 415 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the whole country has been put on shutdown since March 26, but the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise.

The global death toll from coronavirus has reached 344,025 as of Sunday noon.

There have been 5,407,414 confirmed cases around the world after the highly contagious disease was first reported in China in December last, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of those infected, 2,815,023 are currently undergoing treatment with 53,567 being in serious or critical condition.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
