Covid lockdownGovt orders closure of madrasas until further notice

The government has decided to close down all madrasas, including Qawmi ones, until further notice to combat the ongoing Covid upsurge.

The Education Ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on Tuesday.

In the notification, the ministry said that the order had been issued earlier, directing that all educational institutions, including madrasas, remain closed till May 22 as coronavirus cases and deaths were on a steep rise in the country.

"A lockdown has been imposed across the country. However, some madrasas, both residential and non-residential, are still open, which is highly risky.

"Thus Qawmi and all other madrasas will remain closed until further notice," the gazette read.

However, only orphanages will remain open during this period.

Bangladesh imposed a week-long Covid lockdown starting from Monday morning to curb the spread of the deadly virus.
