Cabinet gives nod for Sylhet Medical University

The government has given approval to the draft of a law to constitute a full-fledged medical university in Sylhet Division.

The cabinet in its weekly meeting on Monday approved in principal the draft of the 'Sylhet Medical University Act-2018'.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at Prime Minister's Office (PMO) at Tejgaon in the capital.

Briefing reporters at Bangladesh Secretariat Secretary of the Cabinet Division (coordination and reforms) NM Ziaul Alam said all government and private medical, dental and nursing colleges or institutions in the division would be affiliated under the university.

The university will act as the lone affiliated authority of the any medical colleges or institutions of the division, he said.

The cabinet sent back the drafts of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Articles of Association and Joint venture and Shareholders' agreement which were placed before the cabinet to constitute 'Bangladesh Energy Port Ltd', a public and private partnership company in Banskhali of Chittagong.

Ziaul Alam said the cabinet has formed a 10-member committee headed by Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs in the PMO for further scrutinizing the documents and submit report to any cabinet meeting next time.

The cabinet also cleared a proposal of the Environment Ministry for cutting 902 trees of different species, bushes and jungles in the 11.618 acres reserve forests in Moheshkhali of Cox's Bazar district for construction of road for state owned gas exploration company Petro Bangla.

However, the permission was given on the condition of planting fivefold of trees in the same place after construction of the road and conservation of those for five years, Ziaul Alam said.
