PM to inaugurate Padma Bridge on June 25: Quader

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the long-awaited 6.15-kilometre Padma Bridge on June 25, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, came up with the announcement after meeting with the Prime Minister at Ganabhaban today.

The premier will inaugurate the bridge at 10:00 am where eminent guests from home and abroad will be present, he said.

The minister said they will invite all, including BNP leaders and activists, on the occasion of the inauguration ceremony.

Quader said Sheikh Hasina, however, rejected the proposal to name the bridge after her.

According to the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project office, 98-percent work of the main bridge has been done enabling vehicles to ply it night and day.

The Padma Bridge which is designed in two-tiers with steel-truss composite keeping road on the top and rail below is the deepest foundation bridge in the world.
