Qatar interested to recruit skilled Bangladeshi workers

The country will take skilled manpower from Bangladesh

Qatar has expressed its willingness to recruit skilled workers from Bangladesh in different sectors.

Confirming the matter on Wednesday, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Selim Reza said Qatar would take skilled manpower from Bangladesh as part of its Vision 2030.

He said the decision came at multiple meetings of Bangladesh-Qatar Joint Working Group on Monday and Tuesday in this regard.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar Ashud Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune: “Qatar is now more interested to recruit more skilled labour from Bangladesh, including medical and IT sector. The labour market of Qatar for Bangladeshi unskilled workers had slowed down as the stadiums constructed for 2022 World Cup are almost complete.”

The ambassador also said that nearly 25,000 Bangladeshi workers came to Qatar with employment in 2019. This figure was way higher in 2018.

“The flow of Bangladeshi workers to Qatar has slowed down, but it was never stopped as I am not aware of any negative issue between Dhaka and Doha,” he added.

According to the website of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), more than 76,000 Bangladeshi workers were recruited in Qatar in 2018.

He also said most of the Bangladeshi workers are employed as unskilled labour in the construction sector.

In the meantime, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad told UNB on Wednesday that the decision came at a joint technical committee meeting held in Doha.

“The decision is effective from today (Wednesday),” he said.
