4 killed in Cox's Bazar road accident


14 people were injured in the incident

Four people have been killed and 14 others injured in a road accident in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar.

The accident occurred as a bus plummeted into a road-side ditch near Baniarchhara area of Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway around 10:30pm on Friday.

The identities of the deceased could not be determined immediately, Chakaria police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Habibur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune.

He said: "The driver of Star Line Paribahan lost control of the steering, thus the bus plunged at a roadside ditch and overturned, killing four of its passengers - three men and a woman - on the spot.

"Around 14 people were injured."

After being informed ofthe accident, law enforcement teams from Chakaria police station, Chiringa highway police, Harbang police outpost, and Chittagong Fire Service went to the spot and recovered the bodies, the OC said.

He further mentioned that the bus was carrying 40 passengers.

Traffic movement on the highway was halted due to the accident. However, traffic became normal after the mangled body of the bus was removed from the site by a crane, he added.

Chakaria Fire Service Station Officer Saiful Hasan said: "We rescued the injured people without delay once we arrived there and sent them to the hospital.

"Among the injured, one person is in a critical condition but the others only suffered minor injuries."
