No shortage of vaccineNationwide measles vaccination to begin 20 April: Health minister

Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain on Friday said there is no shortage of measles vaccines in the country, adding that a nationwide vaccination campaign will begin on 20 April.

He made the remarks at a press briefing held at the Health Ministry conference room at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

The minister said the measles vaccination process has started on time and there is currently no shortage of vaccines. However, he noted that the stock of syringes is sufficient until 15 May, while procurement for the subsequent period is underway.

He also said the government has taken all necessary preparations in advance to tackle the dengue situation ahead of the upcoming season, adding that hospitals have been instructed to make proper arrangements.

Expressing concern over a possible rise in tuberculosis cases, the minister said adequate vaccines and preventive supplies have already been secured in advance.

Referring to challenges in vaccine supply, he said the previous government did not procure any vaccines, which has created difficulties for the current administration in arranging essential supplies.

Alleging attempts to obstruct government development initiatives, the minister said a “vested quarter” is trying to resist public welfare activities. He also urged the media to play a responsible role.
