21 executed and 4,000 arrested in Iran after the war started: United Nations

The United Nations reported on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, that at least 21 individuals have been executed in Iran since late February, following the escalation of regional conflict and military strikes by the U.S. and Israel.

Among those executed were nine protesters arrested in January, ten alleged members of opposition groups, and two accused spies.

The UN Human Rights Office also estimates that over 4,000 citizens have been detained on national security charges, with many reportedly subjected to enforced disappearances, torture, and forced televised confessions.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed grave concern, stating that Iranians are facing a dual crisis of external conflict and a severe domestic crackdown on their fundamental rights.
