FT ONLINE

Experts at a seminar have called for formulating a law in a bid to protect the landless and marginal farmers and the agricultural land across the country.

According to them, the law, if formulated, will boost agro output and ensure food security for all.

“The farmland is reducing alarmingly in the country as a section of people is causing sufferings to the country’s farmers by grabbing their land,” speaker said at a discussion meeting at Liberation War Museum auditorium in the capital’s Agargaon area on Tuesday.

Nijera Kori, ICCO Corporation, Human Development Research Centre and Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) jointly arranged the seminar with the support of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

The HDRC chief adviser Dr Abul Barkat presented a summary of the study titled ‘Present Form and Disempowerment Process of the Rural Peasants’ on two northern sub-districts at the meeting chaired by Nijera Kori coordinator Khushi Kabir.

Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon was present at the event as the chief guest, while lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha and advocate Umme Kulsum Smriti MP were present as the special guest.
