Sales of savings certificates through banks resume from Sunday

Savers can make all kinds of transactions related to savings certificates through banks from Sunday, according to a Bangladesh Bank circular issued on Thursday.

The bank branches at Motijheel and Dilkusha in Dhaka and Agrabad and Khatunganj in Chattogram remain open from 10 am to 2 pm every working day, while the banks in other areas keep their services open from 10 am to 1 pm.

The National Savings Directorate has started selling savings certificates on two days a week – Wednesday and Thursday – during the ongoing general holidays.

All district savings offices will remain open from 10 am to 1 pm during the days every week for saving certificates related transactions.

Investors can also encash mature savings certificates and get coupon payments within the limited banking hours during the shutdown as per a Bangladesh Bank circular issued on April 5.

On March 26, the government enforced a countrywide shutdown to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic, which has been extended several times so far.

During the shutdown, the government asked banks to keep their services open on a limited scale so that people could draw money to meet their financial needs.

Banks will provide, on a limited scale, services such as cash transaction, cheque clearing, demand draft, pay orders, treasury challan (bill) submission and others under the payment and clearing system.
