COVID-19 pandemicBD reports 24 more deaths, 2,159 new cases


Bangladesh logged 24 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours till Wednesday 8am.

The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 6,930, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In the meantime, 2,159 people tested positive for Covid-19. The number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 484,104.

The latest day's infection rate was 12.67 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 16.63 percent. The death rate stands at 1.43 percent.

4,772 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 405,966 with an 83.86 percent recovery rate.

Among the latest day's victims, 18 were men and six were women. All the deceased died in different hospitals across the country.

Moreover, 17 of them hailed from Dhaka, two each from Chattogram and Mymensingh, one each from Barishal division.

Meanwhile, 17,042 samples were tested in 140 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 2,911,664 samples have been tested in the country so far.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 5,298 of the total deceased were men and 1,632 were women.

892 people have been placed in quarantine in the last 24 hours. Now, 42,052 people are in quarantine across the country, reads the press release.

262 Covid-19 suspected patients were taken into isolation in last 24 hours. Now, 12,726 people are staying in different isolation units across the country.

The country's first Covid-19 case was reported on March 8 this year and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18.

China was the world's first country which on January 11 reported the first death from the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, the capital of Central China's Hubei province.

At the time of writing, the virus has infected more than  68,657,356  people and close to 1,565,254 people died.
