Govt suspends selling of rice at Tk10 per kg programme

NEWS DESK

The sale of rice at Tk10 per kilogram under a special Open Market Sale (OMS) programme for low-income people has been suspended fearing coronavirus transmission.

At the behest of the Prime Minister, the special OMS programme was started across the country to support low-income people during the corona situation.

Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum, Secretary of the Ministry of Food, confirmed this to media on Monday.

Nazmanara Khanum informed that huge number of people queued to buy rice as the fair price card was not mandatory for this special OMS. Such public gathering may cause sharp transmission of the virus. So, the programme has been suspended for the time being.

The programme will run again after observing the situation later, she added.

She mentioned that an order was also issued to cancel dealerships who misappropriated OMS programme’s rice.
