Jatiya Party to contest national election in 300 seats: Chunnu

Jatiya Party Secretary General Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu has said that the party will contest the general election against 300 parliamentary seats.

Chunnu came up with the declaration while addressing a press conference at the party’s Banani central office on Wednesday.

He said, “We have almost taken all-out preparation to take part in the election. We have been calling for congenial atmosphere for holding a credible national election where people cast their votes without fear."

“We have been assured by the Election Commission and other stakeholders that the election will be held in a free, fair, and acceptable manner. Based on their commitment, our party Chairman GM Quader decided to join the polls."

“We won’t join any alliance or share seats this time,” he said. “Our candidates will contest in all 300 seats.”

Bangladesh is scheduled to go to polls on Jan 7 next year. The Jatiya Party, formed by military dictator HM Ershad, emerged as the main opposition in Parliament in the 10th election boycotted by the BNP. It also retained its position as the main opposition in the following election.

The BNP has declared that it will not contest the Jan 7 polls.

Jatiya Party started selling nomination papers on Nov 20. "We firmly believe in changing the government through elections. We are preparing to participate in the upcoming polls," he said.

Chunnu said there is still time for a political dialogue between the Awami League and the BNP.

He reiterated that there is no division in Jatiya Party, adding: “We’re united under the leadership of GM Quader.”
